    Hip Replacements

We often receive questions like these. You are encouraged to share any input you may have on this subject as well.

"I would like some ideas/feedback on creating a workout for someone who has had a hip replacement and just finished physical therapy."

    Re: Hip Replacements

I’d like more information before I can fully answer a question like this. For instance, what was the type of hip replacement (full or partial)? Was it an anterior or posterior replacement? Right now you could contact the PT with the clients' permission and get the details of your clients sessions. This will help you greatly and also give us more information to work with.

    Re: Hip Replacements

What anyone would absolutely need from a client in this situation would be to know what the surgeon's precautions were in addition to the questions Colleen mentioned. Also, what was the surgery date? Is the client of a normal body weight? Age? What kind of shape was the client in before surgery?

It's a pretty thorough list of questions, but I think will further influence your strategy.

We recently added a podcast episode on this very subject.  You can listen to it and all the other Master Trainer audio podcast episodes at www.peakpilates.com/community/podcasts/Default.aspx

    Re: Hip Replacements

Hi. I just listened to the master teacher podcast on hip replacements. She said to omit leg springs and leg straps for the first couple of months. My client is two years out of surgery. Do I still omit those exercises forever???? Thanks for your help. kristina

    Re: Hip Replacements

There has been a published medical journal on this very subject in the PILATES METHOD ALLIANCE "THE HUNDRED" NEWSLETTER from DECEMBER 2007.  I think if you go to the website www.pilatesmethodalliance.org and search for past issues you can find it.  It is titled as follows:  MD's Recommend Pilates after Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty REHABILITATION AFTER TOTAL HIP AND KNEE ARTHROPLASTY: A NEW REGIMINE USING PILATES TRAINING  By Brent Levine, MS, MD, Beth Kaplanik, RN, Dina Scafura and William L. Jaffe, MD
(Published in the Bulletin of the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in 2007).   It offers some protocols with regard to the matwork only but the fact that it has been published in a medical journal is a such a positive endorsement on the benefits of Pilates!
